Working from home: Day 1

Like many of you I started working part time from home today. I’m sure the novelty will wear off, and I am still going into the proper office from time to time, but I quite enjoyed it today.

I got up at my usual time and was dressed in my smart casual clothes having breakfasted and logged onto the laptop by 8.30 am. I started doing my e-mails whilst simultaneously getting into the Ocado queue on my I-pad. Ocado queue over 144,000 people. Forget that!

After replying to a couple of e-mails I realised that the font on the screen was quite a bit smaller than I am used to and I had unknowingly sent a couple of messages with King Regards instead of Kind! Ha! I am the King of the Castle today working from home, not in my pyjamas. I can do this, I am a professional!

9.35 am. I am actually quite bored now so I call my colleague. I interrupt her doing Joe Wicks’s daily PE workout on You-tube. She says it’s really good and I should do it too. So I have another quick check of my e-mails and go upstairs to change into my jogging bottoms and trainers.

After the first 5 minutes I am really getting into this lounge workout, fist pumping, high fiving the screen. My boss calls. “I’m fine!” I exclaim, super enthusiastically, full of life. I have never been so happy at work. I know I sound weird but it’s too late. He probably thinks I’m drunk or something. I still have the laptop switched on, that counts as still working doesn’t it? I am doing important monitoring work.. sporadically.

I share the You-tube video with a number of my friends. Another quick check of the laptop and then it’s coffee time! My favourite. And the sun is shining and everybody needs a little break to be productive so before I know it I’m out in the gloriously sunny garden eating biscuits, helping my husband look for the tiniest grey screw that has dropped off his telescope onto the grey patio and then I spot the pretty butterflies fluttering about in the breeze. So happy. I start photographing them on my phone trying to get up really close rolling about on the grass now in my jogging bottoms. Working from home is such fun!

First I chased around after this amazing peacock butterfly.

And then I followed the orange one pictured at the top of this page. I think it is called a Comma butterfly, so lovely…

You can imagine how the rest of my day went.. a mixed bag of sort of working, and also really enjoying the sudden lack of pressure in my work. It’s back to the real office tomorrow for a bit of real work, albeit at least 2 metres away from any other humans.
